A Day up Mam Tor

You just wouldn’t believe that it was possible to get sun burned on a Sunday towards the end of April, which is more known for showers. The wind was South Easterly, and since the farmer put up fences everywhere at Bosley MInn, there isn’t really a good LMMGA slope, so Keith and I decided to pay Mam Tor a visit.

When we arrived, the wind was blowing about 10mph on top and there were a profusion of Paragliders. We followed the many tourists up the path to the top of Mam Tor, and parked in the layby near the fence. Helpfully, someone always opens the spring gate for us to save the trouble of having to put 3 models down.

The wind was full on the cliff at the top and the lift was considerable. The view was magnificent. I flew my JW60, Merlin, and Midge. Mostly safe landings but tricky avoiding the many tourists. Close shaves on one or two occasions.

In the afternoon the wind moved round to the South. Fortunately there was too much wind for the Paragliders so no danger there. What we dhould have done is move to Rushup Edge and trying some dynamic soaring but we stayed put. The lift from the South was actually better and all models flew well.

Whereas we had sun in the morning, by the afternoon, the sun had put its hat on, and we left around 4pm.

Drama abounded. There was obviously an accident to a climber or paragrlider somewhere because the air and rescue helicpopter, ambulance, and mountain rescue people were everywhere at the bottom of the hill.
